Unique Christmas gift ideas from 5 small & independent businesses in Bristol

Looking for unique Christmas gifts that support local businesses? Bristol's vibrant independent scene offers a treasure trove of thoughtful present ideas. So this festive season, why not skip the big high street chains and explore the city's small shops, artisans, and makers? To help you with some ideas, I've curated a list of gift options from 5 delightful Bristol-based indies that are sure to bring joy to your loved ones whilst supporting the local creative community.

  1. The Leather Store

First up it’s The Leather Store, set up in 2008 by founder Beckie who turned her passion for handbags and sustainable fashion into this much-loved and well-respected Bristol brand. Inspired by classic designs, with a hint of vintage detailing, The Leather Store‘s pieces are carefully crafted to ensure they last you a lifetime. As well as a huge range of handmade handbags, holdalls, totes and backpacks, they also offer small items such as wallets, washbags and other accessories meaning there’s something for every budget.

I reckon the Melody Smartphone Bag would make the ideal gift for your mum or sister whilst the Nova Leather Credit Card Wallet gets dad’s present sorted in a jiffy.  I also love the Leather Handbag Tassels which will perk up any bag or pouch and make the perfect stocking filler or Secret Santa present.  Full disclosure – I recently bought some of these myself and they really have given my leather bag a new lease of life!

2. Skudaboo

For art fans and those looking to add a pop of personality to their living spaces, Skubadoo offers a fantastic selection of modern and affordable prints that make for perfect Christmas gifts. Set up by Katie whose passion for print was ignited when decorating an unfurnished room in a houseshare, Skudaboo sells a collection of modern, eclectic and affordable premium giclée art prints, posters, frames and home accessories.

Katie’s mission is to help her customers create spaces that feel like home and uniquely theirs, while also providing a platform to showcase amazing artists. Best of all, with prices starting at £10 for an A5 print, you can choose the perfect present without breaking the bank. To help you make your selection, you can shop by theme or by room, or check out the gift ideas and best sellers for some inspiration.  Each print comes ready to frame, making them convenient last-minute gifts that still feel thoughtful and personal.

As a big geometry fan myself, my first gift suggestion is the Abstract Circle Art Print, costing between £10 and £60 depending on paper size. For nature lovers, there is a huge selection of botanical prints featuring lush, detailed illustrations printed on high-quality, sustainable paper. The Pink & Red Vase by Laras Wonderland is super eyecatching or if you’re after something more traditional, I really love this Vase & Fruits Botanical Art Print. Don't worry if you’re struggling to make a selection, you can even purchase a gift voucher so that the recipient can choose their own design.

3. Fruit Salad Clothing

For the fashion-conscious and environmentally-aware gift recipient, look no further than Fruit Salad, Bristol's own ethical clothing brand. This independent label has made waves with its commitment to sustainability and vibrant, unique designs. Fruit Salad breathes new life into pre-loved fabrics, transforming them into unique, limited-edition pieces that stand out from the same old same old mass-produced fashion.

Created from leftover fabrics and fleece the Re-usable Face Pad Packs would make a brilliant stocking filler for mums, sisters and partners alike.  These pads feel super soft on your skin and can be used with your usual make up removal products or warm water, bringing an end to throwaway make-up wipes and cotton wool pads...eco genius!  Each pack comes with 6 x reusable pads and is tied up in a neat bundle of love.

For the teens in your life, the Fruit Salad Octo Beanie makes the perfect gift.  It comes in a range of bold colours and is embroidered in Bristol by the small indie business Hidden Temple.   Or what about one of the Re-worked Sweatshirts? These one-off designs are a great alternative to a Christmas Jumper and best of all they can be worn all year round!

4. Dakota Rae Dust

For those who like their accessories JOYFUL and bursting with colour, let me introduce Dakota Rae Dust….run by self-confessed textile junkie extraodinaire Bec Denton, who creates earrings, necklaces and headdresses that make a real statement. Each piece is handcrafted from embellished new and vintage fabrics then combined with pops of glitter and fluorescent tassles to produce vibrant designs that deserve to be seen!

Because of the limited availability of the fabrics, each piece is eihter a one-off or one of a very limited run, meaning you’ll be the bearer of a truly unique gift (extra brownie points or what?!)  Prices start at £10 and I reckon the Frill Stud Earrings would be a brilliant gift for a friend (or maybe a colleague that you really like?!)

Or what about something that packs a bit more punch?  I have a black and gold pair of the Jewel Earrings which to me are the ultimate party accessory.  There are loads of other Statement Earrings to choose from which are very similar and would make a great option for your sister or sister-in-law. If your recipient is more of a necklace person, then check out the range of Colourful Bib Necklaces.  All are absolutely scrumptious.

5. Mandy Sutcliffe

Mandy Sutcliffe is a Bristol-based artist and illustrator who captures the essence of childhood with her vintage storybook-inspired designs. Each of her hand drawn illustrations is infused with her warm, nostalgic style which draws on the classic themes of childhood, but with an up to date and inclusive feel.

The 2025 Busy Day Calendar makes a thoughtful gift for old and young alike. It would look equally good in the kitchen or on a child's bedroom wall and the beautiful illustrations will be appreciated by anyone who receives it. I reckon this one would also be a great present to give to a class teacher for Christmas.

Mandy's Little Angels series of printed and hand stiched decorations are a fab option if you need to find something for a friend or loved one who lives far away as they're small and light enough to send through the post. Each one is filled with a soft sutffing and a teaspoon of cloves with a sweet little tinsel halo and a velvet ribbon to hang it from. I bought one of these litte cuties last Christmas and have had it hanging up on some dried flowers in my kitchen all year around as it's far too lovely to keep just for the festive season.

I hope the suggestions above have give you some ideas for your Christmas shopping. By supporting these five wonderful Bristol-based businesses this festive season, you're not only giving unique and thoughtful gifts, but also investing in our local creative community.
