How to do layered necklaces

October 30, 2018

Layered necklaces are fast becoming a classic look, but how do you layer with confidence so that you end up looking less Mr T and more effortlessly chic?!  The key is in mixing up a combination of styles, sizes and chain lengths.

A mismatch of styles works much better than pieces that are too similar.  For example, a classic piece from your granny’s jewellery box can look fantastic against a more modern, minimal design.

I like to mix fine and chunkier chains…it looks good and also means that you’re less likely to end up in a tangled mess as the different chains move against each other much more freely.  In the photo above the horseshoe and the Pharaoh are on belcher chains whilst the gold meteorite necklace has a diamond cut curb chain and the silver curl is on a light trace chain.  You can always invest in a couple of different chain types and lengths and then swap the pendants between them to work out what looks best.

The chain length you go for will depend on what you’re wearing and whether you want to wear the necklaces over clothing or on bare skin.  Delicate pieces tend to work well with an open shirt as there’s less space for them, but more is definitely more if you’re going to wear them over your top.  If you start with chains in 16”, 18” and 20” lengths, each piece will have plenty of room to shine.

Think you can’t mix silver and gold?  Think again. Combining metals also works really well or if that’s not your thing and you’d rather stick to the same colour then why not try a variety of finishes – matt, shiny, brushed – for contrast?

As usual, Pinterest is an absolute treasure trove of ideas on how to work this look, like French make up artist Violette (above), showing us how it's done.  If you're feeling inspired then have a dig through your jewellery box and see what you come up with.

My small shape necklaces in circle, triangle, diamond and teardrop styles are great for layering and work really well alongside a bigger piece like the atomic necklace in silver or gold.  All the necklaces come with an 18" diamond cut curb chain as standard, but just drop me a line if you'd like a different chain length or style.
